The pieces fit together like a jigsaw with alternating holes/slats. You don’t put both pieces into one hole, you just turn the piece around to line up with the alternating holes/slats. Hint: Have a rubber mallet. Also the top round piece has the least about of holes/slat openings. It does hold all of docs just fine and it spins well despite their weight.
